I am Fr. Deogratias Fikiri SJ, a Jesuit from Congo. I was born and raised in the eastern part of the Democratic Republic of Congo — a region that has long been marked by violence, displacement, and deep suffering. Growing up amidst conflict profoundly shaped me. I witnessed firsthand the heartbreak of war: families torn apart, communities destroyed, and dreams shattered before they could take root. But even in the darkest moments, I felt a quiet calling — a belief that peace was possible, and that I was meant to be part of building it.
That calling led me to join the Society of Jesus (the Jesuits), and eventually to dedicate my life to the service of faith, justice, and peace. Over the years, I've had the privilege of studying and working in several African countries, always listening, learning, and engaging with communities working tirelessly for peace.
From these experiences, I founded Sowing the Seed of Peace for Africa with other friends who have experienced wars, a mission rooted in hope and fueled by action. This work is deeply personal to me. It's about honoring the stories of those affected by unjust wars and creating pathways for healing and transformation in regions still scarred by war.
I believe peace is not just a dream — it is a responsibility to carry. And I invite you to join us in this mission. Together, we can invest in the people and projects that are quietly and courageously changing the future of Africa, one community at a time.
